NEWS LITE : BAND MISSED GIG OF LIFETIME.

Unfortunately, the band had already been booked to play another wedding and had to say no to the all-expenses-paid gig off the Georgia coast. ``It rocked a lot of the guys in the band when we found out,'' Bell said. ``There's not much you can do about it.'' Polly Nelson, who wrote ``Defending the Devil: My Story as Ted Bundy's Last Lawyer,'' had submitted a lengthy list of ``striking similarities'' with the Grisham best-seller, ``The Chamber.''

``Each tells exactly the same story - the tale of a new lawyer in an establishment law firm who, to meet her or his own personal needs, volunteers to take on the representation of the most notorious killer on Death Row,'' she claimed.

``The inmate faces execution within a few weeks . . . (the two lawyers) must also contend with state politics; the politics of her-his law firm; a restless, marginally cooperative client unwilling or unable to inspire a sympathetic response.''

But U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth, cast in the unusual role of book reviewer, disagreed.

``It is most important to point out that her claim fails because the two works are not substantially similar,'' he said in a memorandum opinion.

Model shows angry side

Linda Evangelista didn't make a good first impression in Taiwan.

``International Model Linda Has a Super Bad Temper,'' blared the headline in Thursday's Central Daily News.

The 30-year-old supermodel shouted and stalked up and down the arrival hall of Taiwan's Chiang Kai-shek International Airport on Tuesday after she was denied a visa because her passport was within six months of expiring.

An onlooker said Evangelista slumped onto a couch, puffing away at a cigarette, while officials reviewed the case and eventually granted the visa.

Evangelista, who is from Canada, was on her first visit to Taiwan for the launch of the Chinese edition of Vogue.
