The Artist formerly known as Prince has dropped his lawsuit against Uptown magazine.

Lawyers say the nonprofit publication written and produced by fans has agreed that, among other things, it will no longer publish ``discographies'' of bootlegs of The Artist's recordings.

The Chanhassen, Minn.-based musician also wants Uptown to stop using the unpronounceable symbol he adopted in 1993 in place of his name. Uptown officials said they had been using the symbol ``out of respect.''

And one of Britain's biggest pasty makers, Ginsters, is launching a national advertising campaign to defend the traditional Cornish treat, a small pie (pronounced PAHS-tee) that contains potato, beef and vegetables.

``In urgent meetings with our advertising agency over the last 24 hours, we even discussed the possibility of placing a poster outside Mr. Grimes' office in New York,'' said Peter Judge, Ginsters' sales and marketing director. ``We hope he will eat his words.''

But Grimes said Friday that he stands by his July 21 column.

During two one-week trips to Cornwall, he said he tried dozens of pasties past·ies

``I understand it's dear to their hearts, but they need to make a better pasty,'' said Grimes, who describes the pasties he ate as ``awful, bland, football-shaped objects that were nearly inedible.''

KEEP OFF: Dog helps with goosey problem

Hundreds of geese that had the run of Central Park in Fremont, Calif. have finally been corralled by a dog freed from the pound to keep them in the pond In the Pond is a 1998 novel by Ha Jin, who has also written Under the Red Flag, Ocean of Winds, and Waiting. He has been praised for his works relating to Chinese life and culture. .

Luke dons a vest every day and chases the Canadian geese into the water but never hurts them, said Judy Felber, the park's supervising ranger.

Felber said she rescued Luke from the pound in August and immediately put him to work. The dog is a McNab, a Northern California breed that is a cross between a border collie border collie, breed of medium-sized, sheepherding dog developed in the British Isles. It stands about 18 in. (45.7 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 30 to 45 lb (13.6–20.4 kg).  and a Scottish collie collie, breed of large, agile working dog developed in Scotland during the 17th and 18th cent. It stands from 22 to 26 in. (55.9–66 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 50 to 75 lb (22.7–34 kg). .

``We had tried everything to get rid of the geese,'' she said Friday. ``People heard of our problem and sent us ideas from all over the nation. We even tried dead decoys to scare them off.''

As many as 1,600 unruly Canada geese monopolized the 450-acre park in the summer, making a dirty mess and gobbling grass down to the mud.

Luke is cutting down on the number of geese that linger after the big summer visit, according to Felber.

``He makes them leave earlier,'' she said. ``We only had 78 last week.''

Some geese have gotten so used to the routine that they jump in the lake when Felber merely whistles, her normal signal for Luke to do his job.

``The whistle makes them do it even when he's not with me,'' she said.

Luke was trained by dogs used to handle cattle, she said.

``The dogs did such a good job their owners now run a company called Goose Busters,'' she said. The dogs are used at golf courses and other places that attract birds.
