800 number mix-up unbearable for firm

They may be cute, cuddly and the pride of Vermont, but mention teddy bears at the Golden Bear Mortgage Corp. in Truckee, Calif., and you're likely to get a growl.

That's because Golden Bear's 800 number is almost the same as that of the Vermont Teddy Bear Co., a well-known firm that uses radio advertising in the Northeast to market the furry, handmade toys as Valentine's Day Valentine's Day: see Saint Valentine's Day.

Those who hear the ads wrong wind up dialing Golden Bear instead of Teddy Bear.

``I know you have bears. Howard Stern said so,'' said one irate caller, who hung up after stressing that she wasn't interested in a home loan. Stern is a popular New York City-based radio personality.

``We probably got about 40 calls today already,'' Christopher Long, vice president of Golden Bear, said shortly after noon one day this week.

``On our 800 line, 75 percent of the calls that have come in were for Vermont Teddy Bear. We'll go an hour with maybe only one or two calls, then they'll suddenly start pouring in. You can tell when they've just run an ad.''

Golden Bear, whose number is (800) 289-2327, asked Teddy Bear to change its phone number, (800) 829-2327. The request was refused.
