FRESH MEADOWS, N.Y., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- News Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NCOM) announced today that it is launching two new publications in the New York metropolitan area.
Westchester Lifestyles, a new newspaper, will publish its first issue next week. This publication is geared towards aspects of gracious living, including dining, entertainment, real estate, books and film. Westchester was chosen because of its high demographic profile, containing more families with incomes over $100,000 than any other county in the United States.
Westchester Lifestyles will be distributed free of charge in the most affluent towns and villages in the county.
A second publication, a weekly newspaper distributed free of charge, will be published in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. An Oct. 20 target date has been set for its launch.
Riverdale is one of the prime residential areas in the New York metropolitan area -- famous for its estate homes, luxury high-rise apartments and exclusive private schools.
Michael Schenkler, president of News Communications, in announcing the creation of the new publications also announced that they will be administered under the direction of Andrew Wolf, who is currently the publisher and editor of The Bronx Press Review, the 53-year-old award- winning community weekly acquired by News Communications nearly nine months ago.
"We are pleased to expand our family of publications," noted Schenkler. "We look forward to the opportunity to broaden our reach into top households in the northern end of the metropolitan area."
Mr. Wolf, who has 21 years of experience in community journalism, and formerly served as commissioner on the New York City Human Rights Commission, has directed the Bronx paper since its acquisition by News Communications. Under his stewardship, both sales and profits have increased at the Bronx Press Review.
"As a result of the higher profile we have assumed with the Bronx Press Review, which has greatly increased its presence in the Riverdale neighborhood, many resident and community leader have asked us to come into Riverdale with a new and separate product," observed Wolf. "They tell us that they enjoy our bold graphics and the hard-hitting editorial posture of the Press Review, but would like to see an exclusively Riverdale content."
Mr. Wolf is a lifelong Bronx resident and 15-year resident of the Riverdale community.
Theresa Girardi has been named as associate publisher of Westchester Lifestyles. A former publisher of an entertainment magazine in Westchester, and a long-time resident of the county, Ms. Girardi brings extensive publishing expertise and marketing acumen to the new venture.
In addition to the Bronx Press Review, News Communications publishes Our Town and the Manhattan Spirit in Manhattan, nine editions of the Queens Tribune and the Western Queens Tribune in Queens County, the Montauk Pioneer and Dan's papers in the Hamptons, all of which are community weeklies distributed in the New York metropolitan area.
