News' ``48 Hours,'' which a season ago was fighting for renewal, is tearing up the ratings pea patch, of late. On Monday night, the 10-year-old newsmagazine beat ``Dateline NBC'' for the first time, pulling an 8.4 rating (percentage of the nation's 98 million TV homes) and a 15 share (percentage of sets in use that tuned in during the time period). At the same time, Monday's ``Dateline NBC'' was its lowest-rated edition ever, earning a 7.8 rating/14 share, and the loss was its first to regularly scheduled programming since ABC's ``Monday Night Football'' ended its season. Monday's ``48 Hours'' also was the night's highest-rated newsmag, outperforming ABC's ``20/20,'' which averaged an 8.3 rating/14 share. Last week, the Thursday-night ``48 Hours'' came within one-tenth of a rating point of beating a repeat of NBC's ``ER,'' TV's top-rated drama.
