NEWS & NOTES : SMITS' EXIT FROM `NYPD BLUE' LEAVES AN OPENING FOR SCHRODER.Byline: Daily News Staff and Wire Services Steven Bochco Productions has cast Rick Schroder as the newest detective on ABC's ``NYPD Blue.'' Schroder, 28, the artist previously known as Ricky, who first surfaced in Franco Zeffirelli's 1979 ``The Champ,'' will fill a void on the veteran drama left by Jimmy Smits, who announced his intention to leave the series to pursue other opportunities. Schroder's role on the Emmy-winning police drama, which begins its sixth season in the fall, is being written. ``Rick Schroder is a wonderful young actor who will bring tremendous energy to `NYPD NYPD New York City Police Department (since 1845; New York City, NY, USA) NYPD New York Play Development Blue' and allow us as writers to approach our sixth season, and beyond, with fresh ideas,'' Bochco said.
