NEWS & NOTES : FAMILY CHANNEL HALTS PROMOS, BUT WILL RUN MOTHER TERESA FILM.

As a sign of respect for Mother Teresa, who died Friday, the Family Channel will suspend all advertising and on-air promotion for an upcoming TV movie about her life until after her funeral.

``We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mother Teresa and acknowledge her death with respect and dignity,'' the company said in a statement. ``Publicity and all promotion for the movie, which premieres Oct. 5, will be stopped until after the funeral After the Funeral is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie and first published in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company in 1953 under the title of Funerals are Fatal  of this esteemed and great humanitarian.''

However, the date of the funeral was not set at press time.

``Mother Teresa: In the Name of God's Poor,'' which chronicles the adult life of the Catholic nun, features Geraldine Chaplin Geraldine Leigh Chaplin (born July 31, 1944 in Santa Monica, California) is an American actress.

She was the first child of Charlie Chaplin and his last wife Oona O'Neill (daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill and author Agnes Boulton).
 in the lead role and was produced by Hallmark Entertainment.

The company plans to precede the screening of the two-hour feature with a written statement: ``This film was prepared prior to Mother Teresa's death on Sept. 5, 1997. The Family Channel presents this film as a tribute to the life and work of this esteemed and great humanitarian.''

Missionaries of Charity is a Roman Catholic religious order established in 1950, which consists of over 4,500 nuns and is active in 133 countries. Members of the order designate their affiliation using the order's initials, "MC.
 said the project had not been endorsed by Mother Teresa. However, a Family Channel spokesman said: ``(Hallmark Entertainment chairman) Robert Halmi Sr. and the esteemed Hallmark Entertainment corporation have assured us that the script for `Mother Teresa: In the Name of God's Poor' was authorized by Mother Teresa.''

Halmi could not be reached for comment.

According to MTV, 7.5 million people watched at least a part of Thursday's show.

Ratingswise, the telecast was the third-highest-rated ever, averaging a 7.5 rating (percentage of the 73 million homes wired for MTV). The 1990 show averaged an 8.5 rating, but MTV's universe was smaller then. And in 1989, the show drew a 7.6 when it reached even fewer homes.

Nielsen figures show that half of the 4.4 million teen-agers and one out of every four of the 4.8 million 18-to-24-year-olds watching cable on Thursday were tuned into the telecast.
