NEWS & NOTES : BRANCHING OUT, SCHWIMMER SIGNS ON FOR STEPHEN KING FILM.

Byline: Daily News Wire Services

David Schwimmer, a star of NBC's ``Friends,'' has not given up his dreams of expanding beyond his role as Ross on that hit comedy.

Besides his current starring role in a play in Los Angeles called ``D Girl,'' Schwimmer agreed Tuesday to be a co-star in a film, ``Apt Pupil,'' which is currently being shot in Los Angeles.

All of this extracurricular work has to be squeezed in around the final two episodes of the ``Friends'' season, which are to be filmed this week and next.

``Apt Pupil,'' to be produced by Phoenix Pictures for the TriStar studio, is based on a novella by Stephen King. Schwimmer will play a school guidance counselor who unknowingly becomes involved in a plot by one of his students to extort To compel or coerce, as in a confession or information, by any means serving to overcome the other's power of resistance, thus making the confession or admission involuntary. To gain by wrongful methods; to obtain in an unlawful manner, as in to compel payments by means of threats of  information about the Holocaust from a neighbor the boy has discovered is a Nazi war criminal in hiding.

The film will be Schwimmer's first since he starred in last year's comedy ``The Pallbearer,'' one of several films made by the stars of ``Friends'' that were disappointments at the box office. The one hit for a member of the show's cast was ``Scream,'' in which Courteney Cox was a co-star.
