NEWMONT MINING AND NEWMONT GOLD ELECT RONALD C. CAMBRE AS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER; PARKER TO REMAIN AS CHAIRMAN OF BOARDS OF DIRECTORS

 DENVER, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The boards of directors of Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) and Newmont Gold Co. (NYSE: NGC) have elected Ronald C. Cambre as vice chairman and chief executive officer, effective Nov. 1, it was announced today by Gordon R. Parker, chairman and chief executive officer of both companies. Parker will retire from an active management position on Jan. 1, 1994 but will serve as non-executive chairman of the boards of directors thereafter.
 Cambre, 55, has been vice president and senior technical advisor to the office of the chairman of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., a worldwide natural resource company, since 1988. He joined Freeport in 1964 and has served in numerous technical and managerial capacities including president and chief executive officer of Freeport McMoRan Resource Partners, and chairman of the board of Rio Tinto Minera, S.A., the Spanish mining group in which Freeport holds a majority interest.
 Cambre is a graduate of Louisiana State University and holds a B.S. degree in chemical engineering. He also has attended the Program for Management Development--Harvard Business School. Cambre lives with his wife, Gail, in Covington, La. He plans shortly to relocate to Denver.
 Parker, 57, was named president and chief executive officer of Newmont Mining in 1985 and has been chairman of Newmont Mining and Newmont Gold since 1986. He began his career with Newmont in 1959 when he joined an affiliate in South Africa. He was elected a corporate vice president in 1981 and a member of the Newmont Mining board of directors in 1983. In 1986, Parker initiated a strategic restructuring of Newmont Mining to focus on gold operations worldwide. Today, Newmont Mining owns 90.1 percent of Newmont Gold, the largest producer from North American operations, and 100 percent of Newmont Grassy Mountain, an advanced gold property in Oregon. Newmont Mining produces gold in Peru and expects to begin producing gold in Uzbekistan in 1995. The company also has significant advanced gold properties in Indonesia and other gold exploration projects worldwide.
