NEWEST 777 SETS RECORD TWIN-ENGINE JETLINER LIFTS HEAVIEST LOAD.

Byline: Daily News

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  - Boeing's 777-300 extended-range jetliner has set a weight record of 774,600 pounds at takeoff - the heaviest ever for a twin-engine airplane airplane, aeroplane, or aircraft, heavier-than-air vehicle, mechanically driven and fitted with fixed wings that support it in flight through the dynamic action of the air. .

Officials announced this week that the record was set May 20 during Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control  certification testing at Edwards Air Force Base. Boeing 777 chief test pilot Frank Santoni and FAA certification pilot Eugene Arnold were at the controls.

Because the airplane's takeoff weight exceeded the planned 759,600-pound certification weight, restrictions were applied to the airplane's center of gravity. Ground and air maneuvers For the military usage, see .

were monitored during takeoff, flight and landing to ensure airplane's structural loads were not excessive.

``The higher-than-normal takeoff (weight) allowed us to gather data for a number of takeoff conditions without refueling,'' said Lars Andersen, Boeing 777 Longer Range program manager.

The jet is powered by two General Electric GE90-115B engines. The GE90-115B is the world's most powerful jet engine, generating 115,000 pounds of thrust. The engine also will be on the ultra-long-range 777- 200LR, now in development.

Two 777-300ER airplanes currently are being put through 1,600 hours of flight-testing. So far the crews have evaluated takeoff, landing, handling characteristics and fuel-mileage tests, recording results that Boeing says exceeded expectations.

tests show a 1 percent improvement over original predictions.

``Our team is excited about the outcome of these tests,'' Andersen said. ``This is just another example of how Boeing meets or exceeds performance predictions In computer science, performance prediction means to estimate the execution time or other performance factors (such as cache misses) of a program on a given computer. It is being widely used for computer architects to evaluate new computer designs, for compiler writers to explore  when bringing a new airplane to market. This is a testimony to our world-class engineers, and the great performance of the GE90-115B and the GE90 team.''

The 777-300ER takeoff weight broke a record held by the 777-300. That airplane had set the previous record of 678,400 pounds during flight testing in 1997.
