 NEWELL APPOINTS DIRECTORS
 FREEPORT, Ill., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry B. Pearsall, chairman


of the Sanford Corp., was named a director of Newell Co. (NYSE: NWL) at its annual meeting. Sanford Corp. merged with Newell Co. on Feb. 14, 1992.
 Pearsall has been with Sanford for 22 years in a variety of positions, becoming chairman of the board and chief executive officer in 1988. Sanford is a leading producer of markers and other writing instruments, and is located in Bellwood, Ill.
 Also named a director was Thomas A. Ferguson, elected president and chief operating officer. Ferguson, age 44, has been president of the Newell Operating Companies since 1989. Prior to that time he served in a variety of positions with the company, including corporate controller, and as president of two Newell divisions. Ferguson joined Newell in 1970.
 Newell manufactures and markets high-volume hardware/housewares, office and industrial products. Hardware/housewares products are sold principally through discount, variety, chain and hardware stores, hardware and housewares distributors and home improvement centers. Office products are sold through mass market chains, office product superstores and office product dealers and wholesalers. Industrial products are sold directly and through distributors to volume purchasers.
