NEWCOMERS LEAD DIRTBAGS TO VICTORY TROJANS LOSE FIRST SERIES OF SEASON.

The questions about the newcomers were quickly put out of the way, and the initial answers were more pleasing for Long Beach State.

In a matchup of teams loaded with youth and uncertainty, Long Beach State put many of its newcomers to use in defeating USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  5-1 Sunday at Dedeaux Field Dedeaux Field is a college baseball stadium in Los Angeles, California, and the home field of the University of Southern California Trojans baseball team. Arif, a transfer from Texas Christian, where he was a reliever, was on a tight pitch count, but held USC to twohits in four shutout innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Vasquez (0-1), a sophomore transfer from Texas A&M who had started in the outfield during the Trojans' first three games, went six innings. The left-hander allowed two runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

The biggest blow of the afternoon came from one of the few established Dirtbags. Shortstop Danny Espinosa, lastyear's BigWest Conference Freshman of the Year, hit a three-run homer on the first pitch from USC reliever Shawn Olsen to cap the scoring in the seventh inning in·ning
