NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS FORMS STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH ADVANCED COMPUTER
COMMUNICATIONS TO JOINTLY DEVELOP INTERNETWORKING PRODUCTS
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Newbridge Networks (NASDAQ-NMS: NNCXF) announces today that the company has formed a strategic alliance with Cupertino-based Advanced Computer Communications. The alliance will enable the two companies to fully develop the potential of Frame Relay and ATM networking by combining advanced bridging/routing features with wide area network services. As a result, users will be offered LAN products that are designed to best utilize services based on Frame Relay and ATM technology.
The alliance strategically associates two leading WAN and LAN internetworking vendors and will allow each to contribute its distinct capabilities to the development of advanced bridges and routers. The first of these efforts is introduced today: the 8231 MainStreet(R) Ethernet Router and 8251 MainStreet Token Ring Router.
"This announcement together with our recent ATM announcement and our Frame Relay capability makes Newbridge the most powerful vendor of public and private networks," commented Peter Sommerer, Newbridge Chief Operating Officer. "ACC was selected by Newbridge because of its router expertise and the obvious synergy between the cultures and development philosophies of the two companies."
"The FAST(TM) QUEUING(TM) feature which automatically reacts to network congestion signalling is a prime example of what can happen when innovative LAN and WAN vendors work together for the benefit of the user," said Ossama Hassanein, ACC President and Chief Executive Officer. "These products are the first in a series of developments which are expected to be announced in the future."
Development is currently underway to incorporate routing technology into the Newbridge 36150 MainStreet AtmNet(TM) Switch. This represents the beginning of a multi-phase strategy to drive the longer term evolution of routing and wide area networking technology.
The first jointly developed products, the 8231 MainStreet and the 8251 MainStreet routers, feature FAST(TM) QUEUING(TM), a protocol which allows routers to react intelligently to congestion notification from Frame Relay switches. Newbridge and ACC engineers worked together to modify the ACC Express Queuing(TM) protocol with Newbridge standards- based Frame Relay technology.
During periods of network congestion, the router will adjust traffic flow to the user-specified committed information rate (CIR) on a VC by PVC basis with the result that information crosses the Frame Relay network according to the user's chosen priority.
In addition, the 8231 MainStreet and the 8251 MainStreet products will support data compression and other bandwidth optimization features which will allow users to reduce recurring line costs. Both products are managed by the Newbridge 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation(TM) and by any SNMP-compliant management system.
End user trials are scheduled to start before calendar year end with commercial availability expected during the first quarter of 1993.
Advanced Computer Communications is a privately held company which develops and markets products that offer customers the ability to interconnect and manage local and wide area data networks.
