NEWBRIDGE MAKES THE CONNECTION FOR VODAFONE
KANATA, ONTARIO, CANADA, June 23 /CNW/ -- Newbridge Networks

(NASDAQ: NNCXF) has been awarded a contract for the supply of Digital Cross-connect systems (DACs) equipment to Vodafone in the United Kingdom, the world's largest mobile telephone operator. Initial orders have been placed under the contract, which is estimated to be worth in excess of $2 million.
The contract covers the supply of 3645 Mainstreet(R) High Capacity Bandwidth Manager products and 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation(tm) network management software for the continued expansion of the Vodafone network including the introduction of GSM, the new generation of pan-European mobile equipment scheduled to be rolled out over the next two years.
The Newbridge products will be used to concentrate traffic from all base stations into the main voice switches. The products will provide Vodafone with a third generation cross-connect capability and will also allow the addition of value-added services such as data and sub-2Mbit/s services. In addition, because the Newbridge DACs are modular, Vodafone will have a cost-efficient growth path, buying additional equipment only as the network grows.
John Tranter, Project Group Manager at Vodafone Group Services, commented, "This is a long-term relationship with Newbridge. The company's flexible architecture, modularity and sophisticated network management system are all reasons why Newbridge offered the strongest solution. Their adherence to standards and commitment to open systems mirrors our own philosophy and provides us with an intelligent platform from which to run our backbone network."
Managing Director of Newbridge Europe, John Everard added, "This is an important and strategic long-term arrangement with Vodafone, and we are pleased to be helping them to expand their network and develop new services. Our network management and pan- European service and support capabilities, will stand us in good stead as the GSM begins to roll out across Europe."
Newbridge networks is an international company which designs, manufactures, markets and services multimedia, standards-based networking products for global LAN and WAN applications, all manageable by a single, graphically rich network management system. Newbridge Networks Corporation is a public company whose common shares are quoted for trading on the NASDAQ National Market System (NNCXF) in the United States and listed for trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange (NNC) in Canada.
