NEW YORK TIMES COMPANY JOINS LENFEST 24-HOUR NEWSCHANNEL; PRESTIGIOUS TIMES NEWS SERVICE TO BE PART OF FALL LAUNCH

 NEW YORK, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The New York Times becomes the latest and largest newspaper publishing company to provide news to NewsChannel, the Lenfest Group's new, 24-hour, newspaper-based, all-news cable channel premiering this fall in the Philadelphia area, it was announced today.
 The New York Times Co. (NYSE: NYT) and Lenfest have agreed to provide the New York Times News Service, which includes reporters in 12 U.S. and 24 foreign cities, to the national and international sections of the NewsChannel newscasts.
 "This agreement is a milestone in the development of NewsChannel," commented George Strimel, president of Lenfest Programming. "The combined reach of the Times News Service gives NewsChannel vast national and international news resources to complement our network of local and regional newspaper coverage."
 NewsChannel, which will emphasize local and regional news, has already entered news provider agreements with more than a dozen daily newspapers in the Philadelphia area. In each case, the newspapers will provide news reports to the cable channel which will repackage them for the television audience. There will be updated newscasts throughout the day, drawing from various news publications, as well as traffic, weather, feature and business news services.
 Lenfest Programming is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lenfest Group, which is one of the nation's largest cable television multi- system operators. In the Philadelphia area, it owns and operates the Suburban Cable television systems. Lenfest is also responsible for producing the Philadelphia Mummers Parade, America's most original New Year's Day celebration.
