NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE ENHANCES CUSTOMER SERVICE
 WITH METAKEY SOFTWARE
WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Anyone who has used more than one on-line computer system to retrieve information knows how frustrating it can be to wade through complicated screens or have to switch terminals completely to find the right data.
New York Life found a solution: the Bell Atlantic MetaKey systems integration software tool.
"Information -- and trust in its accuracy and ease of access -- is a major product of an insurance company, so we find ourselves extremely dependent on computers for our daily productivity," said Andy Hajducek, New York Life corporate vice president, information systems and services.
"As New York Life entered the 1990s, our operating environment contained multiple 'legacy systems' -- huge, complex on-line systems for insurance policy administration developed over the past 10-15 years and representing a significant investment of resources," said Hajducek.
"The ultimate solution is to redesign our business processes and re-engineer the supporting systems," said Hajducek. "But we decided not to simply wait for the ultimate solution but to enhance the value of our legacy systems for our users."
"We began searching the market for a product that would enable us to develop a communications gateway to our current systems," said Hajducek. "In addition, we needed a solution that would not require the total replacement of the thousands of terminals we had in place."
New York Life's gateway has three key features:
-- Single sign-on capability (rather than a separate log-on for each of the on-line policy administration systems).
-- Client focus (until a few years ago, New York Life Insurance clients were recognized in internal systems by their contract or policy numbers).
-- Common presentation (rather than different formats for each type of policy).
"We had considered many different solutions based on our business requirements," said Hajducek. "Then we saw Bell Atlantic's MetaKey software at a trade show in 1990 and realized it could meet our needs within our budget and in a relatively short time frame."
"Within six weeks Bell Atlantic developed a subset of the final system and proved that the MetaKey software could do what was promised," said Hajducek.
"The final system was in place and operational in November 1991, just 12 months after our initial contact," said Hajducek. "New York Life has had an excellent partnership with the Bell Atlantic team."
