Network Associates Inc. has just announced McAfee VirusScan 4.5, the next generation of its flagship virus security software for protecting Internet-connected desktops from increasingly common and damaging computer virus outbreaks. McAfee says the new product combines the market-leading McAfee virus detection and cleaning engine with the industry's only true incremental updating capability for rapid, easy deployment of fixes up to 20 times faster than today's technology allows.

Through content scanning, the software protects against Internet-borne viruses and malicious code found in email, Internet downloads and ActiveX, Java and Java Script Applets, and viruses such as the recently discovered BubbleBoy. The McAfee VirusScan 4.5 product is the industry's only anti-virus solution that enables companies to incrementally update all desktop virus protection easily and quickly to prevent against virus outbreaks, McAfee says. The product can deliver true incremental updates to a company's entire enterprise up to 20 times faster than previous distribution methods due to a reduced signature file size of only 100 KB, which provides only the needed updates and results in saved network bandwidth.
