NEW UNION CARBIDE RESPONSIBLE CARE (A) PROGRESS REPORT INCLUDES SELF-ASSESSMENTS AND PERFORMANCE DATA

DANBURY, Conn., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- A Union Carbide Corporation (NYSE: UK) health, safety and environmental progress report, framed by the six codes of the chemical industry's Responsible Care performance improvement initiative, breaks new ground with performance data and self assessments.
"This is the industry's first report to cover performance in each Responsible Care code area: pollution prevention, process safety, employee health and safety, distribution, community awareness and emergency response, and product stewardship," said Union Carbide Chairman Robert D. Kennedy. "It is also the first to include self- assessments on 106 management practices specified within the codes, and to set an overall goal: having all practices in place by the end of 1996."
The report includes environmental and safety performance data for Union Carbide U.S. and international locations, charts that show U.S. progress toward full implementation of the management practices, and goals for continual improvement.
"Responsible Care is driving our industry to improve performance and publicly demonstrate that improvement," said Mr. Kennedy. "By producing a report aligned directly with the codes, we make it easier for the public to become familiar with Union Carbide progress and the Responsible Care initiative."
 (A) Responsible Care is a registered service mark of the Canadian Chemical Producers Association and The Chemical Manufacturers Association.
