NEW U.S. EPA REGIONAL LAB OPENS IN RICHMOND

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and the University of California today announced the opening of the agency's new regional laboratory at the University's Richmond Field Station in Richmond, Calif. John Wise, U.S. EPA's western regional deputy administrator; Chang-Lin Tien, Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley; and Richard K. Robbins, president, Wareham Development Corp., participated in the opening ceremonies.
"I believe the new laboratory provides us with an excellent resource for strengthening our environmental services," said Wise. "By establishing the laboratory near our San Francisco headquarters, we have enhanced our capability to tackle tough environmental problems quickly and to implement solutions that protect the public health and the environment."
"This project is significant for a number of reasons. It is a model of how a public-private-academic group can begin the dialogue and eventually co-produce an innovative product, making it fit within the tighter budget constraints placed on today's governmental facilities," said Robbins. "The development process used to create this state of the art facility should be used proactively as an example of how to install other appropriate and complementary uses within this new University of California Richmond technology center. The construction may be over, but the future is just beginning."
The 44,000-square-foot laboratory consolidates and expands upon the facilities U.S. EPA Region 9 operated in Las Vegas, Nev., and Alameda, Calif. The new laboratory will analyze environmental samples in support of regional environmental monitoring and enforcement efforts under numerous environmental statues.
