A combined 11 seats were contested in elections across the valley. Tichenor led Richard Peoples and incumbent John Hoskinson in the race for one seat, while incumbent MacGregor ran unopposed for the other seat. Tichenor, 41, a part-time political science instructor at College of the Canyons, was endorsed by Hoskinson, who dropped out of the race but whose name remained on the ballot anyway. Elections in the college and Hart districts were open to 86,300 registered voters across the Santa Clarita Valley, while the Castaic and Saugus district races were open to the residents of those areas.
