NEW SYSTEM AUTOMATES CHECK DETAIL DATA ENTRY; SCANNER-BASED SYSTEM SLASHES LABOR COSTS, IMPROVES CASH FLOW AND ACCURACY FOR BUSINESSES

DALLAS, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Price Waterhouse has introduced PC software that uses a scanner and optical character recognition (OCR) to automate the manual data entry of details from check stubs and remittance advice documents.
"It's a simple, elegant and relatively inexpensive way to reduce labor in cash receipt data entry functions by 50 percent or more," said Gary Adams, manager at Price Waterhouse.
PW-ACRUE is designed to be used by any company that receives checks in volume. Likely users include banks, oil companies, retail companies, wholesale distributors and suppliers, credit card companies and many others.
The system seamlessly combines three technologies: scanning, which transmits the images from check stubs or statements into the PC; optical character recognition (OCR), which allows the PC to understand the images on the checks as numbers and letters; and translation control, through which the system selects and processed the information it needs from each check detail form.
To prepare PW-ACRUE for implementation in their companies, users define for the system the formats of the various check detail forms received from their company's regular remitters. Then, they indentify what information they want to capture from these forms, along with any special processing they wish to automate, e.g., standard calculations, translation of remitter values to their company values, etc.
Henceforth, when a check is received from the remitter, the cash receipts employee simply passes the attached check detail stub or form through a scanner connected to a PC and/or LAN running PW-ACRUE. The system does the rest. PW-ACRUE eliminates the need for a cash receipts person to prepare check detail forms for data entry and reduces the requirements for the data entry person to input the pertinent information.
A unique aspect of the PW-ACRUE integrated system is its intelligent editing and character verification control. First, the system removes any lines, shading, erroneous marks and other "noise" from scanned images. Where other systems require expensive lamps to define shaded areas to be eliminated, it's all built into the PW-ACRUE software.
Then, the system flags any hard-to-identify characters. The user the simply tabs through the flagged characters to verify that PW-ACRUE has identified them correctly.
"Once it's set up, the system is remarkably easy to use, update and maintain," said Adams.
"Even the set-up can be handled by someone without any specific expertise, but we include a week of support and PW-ACRUE user training just to help our customers get started."
Price Waterhouse also offers ongoing maintenance contracts and additional services for those who want them.
PW-ACRUE runs under PC-DOS and Windows 3.1 and integrates Microsystems Technology Incorporated's OCR FOR FORMStm. It can be used either stand-alone or on a local area network (LAN). It uses industry standard image formats which provide adaptable interfaces to most image software products.
