NEW SUPERINTENDENT LEAVES AFTER ONE YEAR.

Byline: KAREN MAESHIRO Staff Writer

LAKE HUGHES -- After only a year on the job, Hughes-Elizabeth Lakes Union School District Superintendent-Principal Dean Bentley has resigned to take a superintendent job in Bakersfield.

Trustees have approved spending $4,000 to hire a superintendent search firm that specializes in working with small school districts.

``We are hoping to find a well-qualified superintendent who will stay a while,'' board President Lola Skelton said.

Bentley's last day was June 30. He started working at the 415-student, one-school district in the foothills between Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. ``He was happy here, we were relatively happy. It was just life circumstances. This is what worked better for him,'' Skelton said.

Bentley has a home in Bakersfield, where his wife works, Skelton said.

Bentley replaced former Superintendent Penelope Mertens, who retired.

The district is seeking someone who can fill the dual role of superintendent and principal.

``What we need is a superintendent-principal because being a one-school district and a very small school district, that's what we need,'' Skelton said.

Bentley was a former cop, hardware store clerk and Wisconsin dairy farmer.

Before coming to the Hughes district, he worked last as an interim administrator at two districts. He was interim superintendent during the first semester se·mes·ter
