NEW STORM SYSTEM HEADED FOR SOUTHLAND : WARMER DOWNPOURS COULD BRING UP TO 2 INCHES, DROPPING SNOW LEVEL.

Byline: Mary Beth Alexander Daily News Staff Writer

As Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  braces for another bout of treacherous winter storms, Southern California, too, should prepare for heavy downpours through the weekend, weather officials said.

One to two inches of rain could fall in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The combination of warm moisture from the south and a storm system moving down from the north will create warmer rainfall that could make some ski areas soggy, and bring snow only to elevations above 7,000 feet, Seto said.

The U.S. Forest Service issued an avalanche warning for some Southern California Mountain ranges, including the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. After the heaviest storms taper off late today, lighter showers are expected to continue falling Sunday. Light rains could persist through Tuesday, Seto said.

In flood-plagued Northern California, state authorities prepared for a new surge of water through rain-swollen rivers as the powerful Pacific storm headed across the coast.

Up to four inches of rain in low-lying areas, with six inches or more in coastal mountains and the Sierra Nevada foothills were expected through this afternoon. Several feet of new snow was expected throughout the Sierra Nevada above 7,000 feet elevation.

The state still is recovering from a New Year cycle of storms that killed eight people and caused $1.6 billion in damage. Earlier this week, heavy rains caused scattered flooding in Northern California.

Water officials said they were most concerned about the already-soggy San Joaquin Valley Noun 1. San Joaquin Valley - a vast valley in central California known for its rich farmland
