NEW SPRINT E-MAIL SOFTWARE FOR PCS
IS FIRST TO OFFER INTEGRATED COMPRESSION, ENCRYPTION FEATURES
ATLANTA, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today introduced an enhanced version of its PC SprintMail software with integrated encryption and compression features that are unique to public mail networking software.
PC SprintMail, first introduced in 1986, is an easy-to-use software package that lets personal computer users communicate with more than 350,000 subscribers of SprintMail, Sprint's global electronic messaging service, and -- via X.400 interconnections -- with users of public e-mail services, private systems and Local Area Networks (LANs) worldwide.
The new features of PC SprintMail 2.1 allow personal computer users to reduce communications costs and improve efficiency through several time-saving modifications, including:
-- File Compression: Users can compress messages by as much
as 80 percent, significantly reducing character charges
and transmission costs. PC SprintMail 2.1 uses the
industry-standard PKZIP compression program from PKWARE.
-- Address Book: Users can type entries into an address book
or have PC SprintMail automatically copy addresses from any
message -- eliminating the need to retype X.400 and other
 lengthy addresses.
-- Encryption: This security feature is fully integrated so
that users can easily and quickly send messages in encrypted
 form.
-- Message Database: Messages can be stored in a database and
retrieved through a number of selection criteria such as date,
 sender, recipient, subject and text.
-- Increased LAN Access: LAN e-mail users on the Banyan,
Ungermann-Bass, 3Com, Eicon and Novell systems can now use
PC SprintMail to interconnect with the SprintMail global
 messaging service.
"This new version of PC SprintMail reflects the changing needs of today's global electronic messaging users," said Alan Rossi, vice president and general manager, value added services, for Sprint International, Sprint's international telecommunications subsidiary.
"International users in particular will see a dramatic reduction in overseas communications costs by transmitting compressed files, and all users will appreciate the increased security of the integrated encryption service," he said.
PC SprintMail 2.1 retains benefits of the earlier version including a user-friendly, menu-driven format and support for all standard SprintMail delivery options including facsimile, telex and delivery via U.S. mail.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
