The 17-year-old and a 20-year-old companion had been walking along East Avenue Q about 10 p.m. Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week.  from the Palmdale Metrolink station when someone either in a vehicle or on foot shot them.

The companion, although bleeding from his wound, had run two blocks for help at a home where someone called 911.

``They were walking from the Clocktower Plaza to Fifth Street East. They were almost at the corner when they were shot,'' sheriff's homicide Sgt. Greg Hinkle said Monday morning at the crime scene, where deputies closed streets and blocked off the nearby continuation high school.

The shooting was at least the third since Friday evening in the area of the city bordered by Avenue Q, Avenue S, 20th Street East and the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. About 10 p.m. Saturday, a 23-year-old man was shot and wounded on Fifth Street East near Avenue Q-6. Sheriff's officials described his wounds as not life-threatening.

Sunday night's slaying, which occurred less than one-half mile from the scene of the shooting Saturday night, claimed the life of 17-year-old Jesus Avalos of Palmdale.

Avalos was pronounced dead on the sidewalk A Microsoft service that was launched in 1997 to provide online arts and entertainment guides on the Web for major cities worldwide. His companion left a trail of blood up the sidewalk in front of the school as he ran for help.

The companion, whose name was not made public, was treated at a hospital and released, Hinkle said.

Hinkle said investigators weren't sure if the Avalos' killer left in a vehicle.

``Some people gave varying descriptions of a car leaving. There were other people out in the area, coming and going,'' Hinkle said.
