The Foothill League season.

Coaches say yearly that it doesn't matter what happens in the first five games. That's why Hart coach Mike Herrington is unconcerned that his team is 3-2. The same holds true for Saugus coach Jack Bowman and his 2-3 Centurions.

Valencia finished nonleague play with an area-best 4-1 record. But as coach Brian Stiman would say, you don't win anything for having the best nonleague record.

``No, not at this point,'' Stiman said. ``Everyone starts back at 0-0.''

What matters is what you do in league. The top three finishers advance to the playoffs, so every game matters for the next five weeks.

A look at the Foothill League, week one (all games begin at 7:30 p.m.):

Hart (3-2) at Canyon (2-3): This used to be the big game each year. The schools were in different leagues but were the class of them. They met on the first game of the season to packed crowds at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. . Heroes were made in those games.

Now, Hart has won 23 consecutive league games on the way to six consecutive titles. Canyon hasn't won a league title since 1989.

``It might have lost some of its intensity and high focus because one team has been dominant for a while,'' Canyon coach Larry Mohr said. ``But Canyon's kids have a lot of pride. They may not be as talented, but they want to beat Hart.''

It won't be easy. The Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

Quarterback Travis Carroll has passed for 1,079 yards (sixth-best in the area) and 10 touchdowns, and Cody Joyce has rushed, received and scored.

Burbank (2-3) vs. Valencia (4-1) at College of the Canyons: This is Valencia's first league game in school history. Stiman said it's important to get that first victory quickly, yet the Vikings are more interested in getting on the field and correcting mistakes that cost them last week against Littlerock (a 30-28 loss).

Donavan Calhoun has rushed for 797 yards, fourth best in the area, and has scored 11 touchdowns, which ranks second. Caleb Willis has caught 21 passes for 420 yards and five touchdowns. Kenny Broadus-Taylor has 794 passing yards (11th best) and six touchdowns.

Saugus at Burroughs (2-3): The Centurions have faced run-oriented teams this season. Burroughs is pass-happy, with J.K. Scott's 1,193 yards third-best in the area and Glenn Adriatico's 623 receiving yards and nine touchdowns tops in the area. Adriatico also has 35 receptions, which ranks second.

Saugus is led by Mark Pecaro's 475 rushing yards in 111 carries and eight touchdowns. Backup quarterback Travis Ivey (10 of 24 for 159 yards, no TDs and an interception), will start for the second week in place of Chris Kobe, who hurt his knee against Quartz Hill. Bowman said Kobe is expected back next week against Burbank.
