Some 330 residents who call the Long Canyon Village home now have a hiking trail leading up to a spectacular view of the neighborhood and beyond.

The Rancho Simi Rancho San José de Nuestra Senora de Altagarcia y Simi is one of the land grants in California by the Spanish government. The name derives from Shimiji, the name of the Chumash village here before the Spanish.  Recreation and Park District officially opened the first 2.3 miles of what will eventually be nine miles Nine Miles is a reggae "band" started by Yoshiaki Manabe (真鍋吉明) of The Pillows. The name Nine Miles comes from the name of the town in which Bob Marley grew up in Jamaica.

``The homes here are tucked against nature,'' sad Ed Hayduk, the district's planning and development director. ``People who move to Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and longtime residents talk about the quality of the parks and the need to preserve pristine hillsides. Now there's a place for residents to recreate.''

Simi Valley now has about 27 miles of public trails for hikers, bikers and equestrians, he said.

The 2.3-mile trail, open to everyone, begins on Long Canyon Road and moves east over rolling hills Rolling hills are like a mountain chain, only a "hill chain" of hills that roll on and on continually. You will often find them in between plains and mountains, near major rivers, or randomly anywhere. The only places without rolling hills are deserts and flood plains. , ending on Bluegrass bluegrass, any species of the large and widely distributed genus Poa, chiefly range and pasture grasses of economic importance in temperate and cool regions. The remainder of the nine miles, which district officials have been planning for 15 years, will be opened within the next year.

For Simi Valley resident Judy Coxsey-Hirsch, 44, the trail adds a new lifestyle dimension to the Long Canyon home she moved into in August.

``I've never been one for getting on a treadmill inside of four walls,'' she said. ``I enjoy walking. That's my exercise.''

Long Canyon is one of four villages in the Wood Ranch development, which will house about 12,000 residents at full buildout.

Long Canyon alone will have 2,000 residents when construction of its 670 homes on the 1,800-acre tract is complete.

``We're really emphasizing recreation and healthy living,'' said Tom Zanic, vice president of Santa Monica-based development company New Urban West Inc.

``We couldn't walk where we were before,'' he said. ``The neighborhood was too busy. She loves this place.''
