``College of the Canyons is poised to become the only college in the nation offering a program like this,'' said Kevin Anthony, director of the program, who will lead of the online courses. ``It's a real exciting time for us.''

With the help of a $19,000 grant from the Community Colleges Chancellor's Office, students log on to the program's interactive Web site and follow the Internet-based curriculum.

``Offering classes in this way gives students much more flexibility by allowing them to participate when it's convenient for them,'' said Barry Gribbons, dean of institutional development. ``We're setting it up to be an interactive experience between the instructor and students.''

About 100 students were estimated to have enrolled in hospitality law and front-office management, two courses that started Aug. 21.

The courses are available to the U.S. military through their distance learning program, Defense Activity Non-Traditional Education Support, which is accessible to military personnel in the U.S. and abroad.

Via a Web site, students are guided through lessons with audio lectures from the classroom, assignments and tests. Part of the program offers an interactive session, where students can chat with instructors.

``We'll be the only college in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  that will be offering the online courses in hotel and restaurant management,'' Bozman said. ``We'll have students nationally.''

The hospitality industry is huge in California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W). , and there is a growing need for thorough training, Anthony said.

The new program allows students from throughout the nation to attend a College of the Canyons course and give students in the hotel and restaurant management program more flexibility.

``Our biggest problem is the fact that a lot of people in this industry are not able to attend traditional classes because their shifts change or they just get busy at work,'' Anthony said. ``These are not typically 9 to 5 jobs. And despite the fact that this is the state's biggest industry, there continues to be a lack of well-trained managers.''
