NEW POSTING FOR PRINCIPAL AT MOORPARK; FRIEDMAN REASSIGNED TO PROJECTS AT DISTRICT.

Byline: Paul O'Donoghue Daily News Staff Writer

Ousted Moorpark High Principal Max Friedman was reassigned Wednesday to work the rest of the school year at the district's administrative office rather than spending the next month on campus.

Home with a cold, Friedman said he was told by Moorpark school district Superintendent District Superintendent may be:
  • District Superintendent (United Methodist Church)
  • A rank in the London Metropolitan Police in use from 1869 to 1886, when it was renamed Chief Constable
Tom Duffy to report to the district office for the remainder of the school year.

``I was removed from the school,'' Friedman said in a phone interview. ``(Duffy) said that I was making derogatory de·rog·a·to·ry

 remarks about the teachers.''

Duffy did not return phone calls, but Assistant Superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  Frank DePasquale denied that Friedman was being punished pun·ish

for anything he'd said since the school board voted unanimously against renewing his $84,780-a-year contract.

``He's been reassigned on projects for the transition for the new administration,'' DePasquale said, adding that such changes are normal during transitions.

School board President David Pollock also said that administrators wanted Friedman to work on special projects, such as the school's emergency plan.

``This is not punishment,'' said Pollock. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

 him.''

Friedman announced over the school's public address system May 13 that he would not be returning to the campus in the fall. The following day, several hundred students staged a protest by walking out of the building after third period.

Administrators have refused to say why the principal's contract was not extended, citing privacy reasons. But Friedman has said he believes that teachers in the English Department Noun 1. English department - the academic department responsible for teaching English and American literature

The school district has been advertising for a principal for the past few weeks on the Internet Internet

and in education magazines and mailings to school districts, said Ellen Smith, the district's personnel chief.

``We believe we will fill it by the end of June,'' she said.

She said she didn't know whether any applications had been received yet for the post that has a pay range of $69,703 to $84,780.

She and Pollock said the selection process would differ from that used to recruit Friedman, with district officials this time making ``site visits'' to interview people familiar with the candidates.

That wasn't done in Friedman's case because it was after the end of the school year, Smith said. The closing date for applications for the job is June 7.
