NEW OPEN SIGNALLING(TM) SWITCHING PLATFORM FROM TEKELEC WINS $2.1 MILLION ORDER FROM ALLNET

NEW OPEN SIGNALLING(TM) SWITCHING PLATFORM FROM TEKELEC
WINS $2.1 MILLION ORDER FROM ALLNET
CALABASAS, Calif., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), today announced the first Open Signalling(TM) switching platform for telecommunications companies operating within the current Common Channel Signalling No. 7 (CCS7) and Advanced Intelligent Networks (A.I.N.). Called EAGLE(TM), the new network switching platform is an extremely flexible, fault tolerant, high-speed packet-switching platform which provides Open Signalling Access(TM) (OSA) and takes full advantage of the sophisticated and complex nature of the current CCS7 backbone and the intelligent network for advanced services applications.
Tekelec's EAGLE platform is the first in a series of products to address the Open Signalling Access market. This market, comprised of local telephone companies, interexchange carriers, cellular providers, private networks, and equipment manufacturers, particularly database suppliers, requires exceptional flexibility and throughput capacity at an affordable cost.
The open architecture of EAGLE provides an access and switching solution to carriers, manufacturers and data base suppliers entering the CCS7 product market. Tekelec's first product, the EAGLE(TM)-STP/1, is the first in a series of products based on the Open Signalling switching platform to be released by the new Tekelec Network Products Group. The EAGLE-STP/1 capability, which is economically scalable from 8 to 128 ports, will be offered in several generic product releases to accommodate the growing needs of the marketplace.
The company also announced that Allnet Communication Services Inc. has placed an order worth up to $2.1 million for EAGLE-STP/1. Allnet is one of the United States' largest providers of long distance telecommunications services that has continued to emphasize the development, and introduction of innovative products and services to its customer base. Tekelec's EAGLE-STP/1 will be delivered to Allnet in April 1992.
"Open Signalling Access takes full advantage of the sophisticated and complex nature of the current CCS7 backbone and the intelligent network for advanced services applications. We recognize that Advanced Intelligent Networks offer a significant new source of business opportunities to network providers worldwide, as they look to develop new sources of revenues," said Peter N. Vicars, president and chief executive officer of Tekelec. "To capitalize on these opportunities, network providers rely more heavily on the CCS7 network. Tekelec's expertise and knowledge of the CCS7 protocols facilitated the development of EAGLE. More importantly, we have established a cost- effective architecture with exceptional throughput capacity which we believe meets both the market's financial and system requirements for many of the advanced services interface requirements. The $2.1 million order from Allnet serves to confirm the company's belief that communications companies need a smaller, cost-effective Open Signalling system for access to the CCS7 networks and that Tekelec has the capability to deliver and support such systems."
Fred Tinch, vice president network products, who led the development of the product at the company's North Carolina facility, added, "Access to information through the CCS7 network is one of the keys to providing advanced services and feature improvements to service providers to enhance their business opportunities. EAGLE's economics are so compelling that a new view of network backup and redundancy is possible. The EAGLE platform can be used in a number of different applications, including a Signal Transfer Point (STP), Signalling Point Interface (SPI) enabling access to the CSS7 network from centralized data bases, protocol conversion, internetwork gateway functions and/or intelligent network surveillance applications. Just as important as the technology, is the effort we are making to develop the service and support infrastructure within Tekelec for EAGLE."
Tekelec designs, manufactures and markets innovative diagnostic systems and network processor platforms worldwide for the intelligent communications network. Tekelec's products provide monitoring, simulation, and network resident applications for the major components of the Intelligent Digital Network: protocols, transmission, signalling and cellular. The company's products address a wide spectrum of protocols (ISDN, frame relay, X.25, OSI), signalling (SS7), cellular (GSM) and FDDI technologies. Tekelec's products are sold principally through a direct sales force in the United States, Japan, Australia and Canada, and through distributors worldwide.
