NEW MOON RISING; ROYAL SENIOR WILL COMPETE AT S.V. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Roy Moon didn't play at the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Amateur Golf Championship last year. He didn't think he was good enough.

What a difference a year makes.

``Last year, I wasn't ready to play,'' acknowledged Moon, who is entering his senior year at Royal High. ``Now, it is much less intimidating because there is more confidence on my part.''

Shooting five straight rounds under par during the most important stretch of the high school golf season will do something for one's confidence.

After a slow start, Moon finished with three birdies in the final six holes for a 3-under-par 69 and second place in the state behind a tournament-record 66 shot by University High's Ron Won.

``Roy really has matured in the last few years,'' said Royal coach Bob Misko. ``He has always had the game, but his mental approach is really solid now. He isn't afraid to play it safe and tries to score well, not outdrive the other guy.''

 Misko.

``Both are very much under control and even-tempered on the course,'' Misko said. ``They both drive the ball well and are accurate with their irons. Roy hits more greens, but Anthony's short game is borderline remarkable.''

Moon is excited about participating in the Simi tournament for the first time.

``It's a local tournament and I will have a lot of supporters,'' Moon said. ``There are a lot of good players competing in this event and I know many of the participants. It should be a lot of fun.''

Most of the 170 golfers entered in the tournament are older than Moon, but he doesn't think his age will be a problem.

``Experience is not as much of a factor anymore,'' he said. ``It would have been last year, but I'm more comfortable after playing against the top competition I've faced in the past year.''

Pressure certainly isn't foreign to Moon. He had the coach of his dream school, UCLA, following him around for a couple of holes at the State Championships. Moon hopes to follow his sister to UCLA next year, if he can qualify academically.

Moon credits private coach Jay Sinn with his rapid advancement over the past year. Sinn, the father of LPGA LPGA

golfer Pearl Sinn, began training Moon two years ago.

``I started with just a couple of lessons and I'm still going to him,'' Moon said. ``He brought length to my game to the point that now I have to tone it down a little bit.''

Hopes of going pro loom in the back of Moon's mind and he admires another one of Sinn's students, Charlie Wi. The Westlake High alumnus ALUMNUS, civil law. ``I look up to Charlie,'' Moon said. ``We practice a lot when he is home and help each other out.''

Golf has taken Moon away from home frequently this summer. In the last couple of months, he has played at tournaments in Oklahoma, Las Vegas, Arizona and multiple times in Palm Springs.

Rotating back to a home tourney promises to be fulfilling for Moon. He hopes to post a good score in the first round so he can be paired with a top player in the second, maybe even Marciano.

``Playing with the defending champ would be great,'' Moon said.

Just last year, it would have been intimidating. That's the difference with this new Moon.
