SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- Marc Emmer, active in a group aimed at steering high school students toward careers, has been named to the board of the nonprofit Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Facilities Foundation, which finds land for new schools.

``Marc has many skills that will be valuable for the facilities foundation's work,'' board President Rick Patterson said. ``I am especially impressed with his effort to get many stakeholders at the same table and raise the general awareness of everyone's efforts.''

The foundation has been the target of criticism because it works behind closed doors, cutting real estate deals to help hasten the bureaucratic process of building schools for the William S. Hart Union High School District. The practice is standard because prices tend to spike if it's known a public entity is a buyer.

Aside from his work with the business alliance, Emmer also has worked with Junior Achievement, the Santa Clarita Valley Boys & Girls Club, Special Olympics and the Girl Scouts.
