NEW MARKETING LEADER TO BE KEY PLAYER IN CN NORTH AMERICA TURNAROUND STRATEGY

MONTREAL, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- CN North America has hired one of the brightest lights in the railway industry to lead its freight marketing efforts for the future.
The appointment of Gerald Davies, former vice president of marketing for Burlington Northern, and vice president of marketing services for CSX Transportation, was announced today by Paul M. Tellier, CN president and chief executive officer. The appointment is effective Nov. 1.
"Mr. Davies' very diversified background in the railroad industry will constitute a major asset for CN," said Mr. Tellier. "His involvement as co-author of the report to Congress on the U.S. Northeast railway industry crisis, which led to the creation, and subsequent privatization of Conrail; his work on shortline economics, his various roles in CSX and Burlington Northern will enable Mr. Davies to make a significant contribution to CN's future."
Mr. Tellier described Mr. Davies as a leader and an innovator during both railroads' drive to focus on more customer-oriented service. "He will bring fresh approaches to marketing CN's domestic and international services. His extensive background and knowledge of the U.S. railway industry will make him a key player on the CN management team and in our turnaround efforts," said Mr. Tellier.
Mr. Davies, a native of Lethbridge, Alta., succeeds John Guppy as CN's senior vice president of marketing. Mr. Guppy has been named senior managing director, overseas markets, for CN and will conduct a review of CN North America's marketing organization and activities in Europe and Asia.
Mr. Davies, 49, has a doctorate in transportation economics from Washington State University. He is a member of the board of directors of the National Freight Transportation Association and the Electronic Data Interchange Association.
During the early seventies, he served as a rail industry economist with the U.S. Department of Transportation and as assistant to the president of the U.S. Railway Association. He joined BN as a senior economist in 1976 and gained extensive experience in operations and marketing.
Mr. Davies left BN to join the Chessie System (now CSX Transportation) as assistant vice-president, coal marketing in 1984. The following year, Mr. Davies was appointed vice president of marketing services, with responsibility for price policy and management, revenue billing, freight claims and electronic data interchange.
In that capacity, Mr. Davies conceived a computerized price creation and management system, still the only such system in the rail industry, and introduced quality principles to all aspects of the railway's marketing support services for customers.
He became vice-president of Marketing for BN in 1991, establishing a strong customer focus through an empowered field sales organization.
