NEW MARATHON COURSE SHAKES A LEG IN THE VALLEY RACE MAPPED TO ACCOMMODATE CHURCHES.

Byline: RICK ORLOV Staff Writer

A new course for the 23rd Los Angeles Marathon The Los Angeles Marathon is an annual marathon held in Los Angeles, California since 1986. It was inspired by the success of the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. The race starts at about 8:15AM and runs through Downtown Los Angeles, Koreatown, the Crenshaw district, and  was announced Monday in an effort to accommodate churches that have had to compete with a route they complained interfered with Sunday churchgoers.

The March 4 marathon will mark the first time a leg of the race will be run in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

It will start at Universal Studios, go through the Cahuenga Pass The Cahuenga Pass (IPA: [kə'wɛŋgə]) (from the indigenous Tongva language) (el. 745 ft. / 227 m) is a mountain pass through the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains in the Hollywood district of the City  and past the Hollywood Bowl The Hollywood Bowl is a modern amphitheatre at 2301 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, California, USA, that is used primarily for music performances. City crews will reopen streets as soon as runners pass to keep traffic flowing.

``As you all know, the marathon is 26.2 miles of hard work, sweat, tears, sacrifice and desire,'' Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said during a news conference at Universal Studios.

``And while 26.2 miles can be very grueling for the athletes running the course, it's also challenging for the city of Los Angeles

Villaraigosa said he'd worked with marathon officials to develop the new route to accommodate church leaders, who have complained that the event shut streets and disrupted traffic.

``I am pleased to recognize the organizers of the Los Angeles Marathon for their excellent leadership in producing this great event for more than two decades,'' Villaraigosa said.

Bill Burke, who founded the race, said the route will produce a more direct point-to-point race that should result in record times.

``Immediately following this year's race, we set out to design the most business-friendly, church-friendly, participant-friendly and spectator- friendly course in our history,'' Burke said.

``This is a mostly downhill course that holds the potential for our fastest times ever. When you combine that with the new starting line, we expect the largest increase in out-of-town participants in our history.''

The race is one of the more popular in the nation.
