NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: TITLE IS UP FOR GRABS GRANADA HILLS, PALISADES FACE STIFF COMPETITION IN CITY GOLF.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

Leader board variety has been as rare as a double eagle the past 13 editions of the City Section golf championship - at least at the top spot.

Chatsworth High won a title as a going-away present for retiring coach Dick Pendergast in 1997, but in every other final since 1992, the section team championship has been won by nine-time titlist ti·tlist

It could happen again this season, given the residual benefit of such success to programs that have produced 24 section titles.

Granada Hills, which won eight section championships in coach Joe White's final 13 seasons before his retirement last June, is expected to contend for new coach Chris Ancheta.

Palisades, winner of four of the past seven City finals after restarting its program in 1997 under coach James Paleno, has the most section titles among City golf programs.

This season appears headed for anything but the usual two-team battle.

Cleveland of Reseda, which finished fifth in the City Section last year, went undefeated in the first half of 5-A League play. The Cavaliers defeated North Hollywood, which shot 191 last month - the best nine-hole score by a City team this season.

"El Camino Real has a great shot, and some team from the 5-A League could contend," said Monroe of North Hills coach Todd Todd , Sir Alexander Robertus 1907-1997.

"I would say five or six teams could win City this year," said third-year El Camino Real coach Eric Choi, whose Conquistadores have showed the most in ehat traditionally is the City's toughest league.

Juniors William Aniello, Johnny Frost and Sam Scarpaci and sophomores Raul Vargas and Thomas Lodwig are ECR's returning starters. Lodwig shot 69 as a freshman, finishing fifth in the City to qualify for state regional play.

"They can battle," Choi said of his team's best competitive quality. "When they're not playing their best, they find a way to score."

Choi, who also coaches in the successful ElCamino Real soccer program, turned out two individual regional qualifiers - Marshall Dick and Brandon Nunez - in his first season as the Conquistadores' golf coach.

"I don't think it was any surprise, because they all have shot those scores before," Miller said. "It's just that they all did it on one day. We've been somewhat erratic er·rat·ic

"I think this is really good for golf, to spread out the wealth," Miller said. "Granada Hills and Palisades used to win it every year. ... Now it's wide open."
