NEW JUDGE TO HEAR IMMIGRATION CASES.

LANCASTER - A retired Air Force colonel has been assigned to handle imprisoned immigrants' deportation cases at the Mira Loma jail, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

Immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important.  Judge Michael A. Kilroy, a former Air Force judge advocate, will replace Immigration Judge Robert O. Vicars, who is being reassigned to the Los Angeles Immigration Court.

Vicars had heard cases at the Mira Loma jail since March 1999.

Kilroy was appointed an immigration judge this month. He served as an Air Force judge advocate from 1973 until January, when he retired. Kilroy also served as a military criminal trial judge at Travis Air Force Base Travis Air Force Base (IATA: SUU, ICAO: KSUU) is a United States Air Force air base in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. Travis Air Force Base is located within Fairfield, Calif, in the northeast part of town.  in Northern California and at Yakota Air Base in Japan.

He holds undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Montana.

Vicars had been an immigration judge since 1999. He received his law degree from Western State University College of Law For the Colorado college, see .
