NEW JERSEY BELL PLANS TO EXPAND THREE-WAY CALLING

NEWARK, N.J., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Keeping in touch with friends and making business plans will be easier and more convenient thanks to a new twist on a service currently offered by New Jersey Bell, a Bell Atlantic company.
Under a proposal the company filed today with the state Board of Regulatory Commissioners (BRC), Bell Atlantic(R) Three-Way Calling would be available on a pay-per-use basis in six trial areas beginning as early as August (1993). The service has been available statewide by subscription to $2.28 per month with unlimited usage. The proposed charge is 75 cents per use for customers who occasionally want to use the service and don't want to subscribe to it.
To use Three-Way Calling on a pay-per-use basis, a customer would dial a three-digit code on a Touch-Tone equipped phone line, of four digits with a rotary dial phone line, before making a call. By enabling three people to talk on one call, the service helps eliminate calling back and forth to check schedules, resolve problems or make arrangements.
The trial areas are Asbury Park, Edison, Elizabeth, Keyport, New Brunswick and Westfield. Residential and single-line business customers in those areas will be notified by New Jersey Bell when the pay-per-use option becomes available.
"Per-use pricing gives our customers the opportunity to try services without paying one-time connection charges and monthly service charges," said Bell Atlantic Product Manager Bruce Betancourt. "Our customers have enjoyed per-use pricing since 1991 on Return Call and Repeat Call and we expect similar positive results with per-use Three-Way Calling."
In a separate action, recently the BRC eliminated the one-time connection charge for customers who decide to switch to subscription from pay-per-use on the Bell Atlantic(R) Return Call and Repeat Call services. The company is requesting the same arrangement with Three-Way Calling.
Return Call lets you automatically return the last call you received, whether you answered the ring or not. Repeat Call automatically redials the last telephone number that you dialed and keeps trying to make the connection if the line is busy.
