NEW HOTLINE OFFERS FRIENDS A CHANCE TO SEND ENCOURAGING 'WAKE UP' CALLS
TO SMOKERS; CALLS PLACED ON THE DAY OF THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT
MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Most smokers benefit from the encouragement of colleagues, friends and family during efforts to stop smoking. A new "Wake Up" hotline, established for this year's national Great American Smokeout, was designed to make giving such support easier.
From now until Nov. 18, people can call the "Wake Up" hotline to record personal, encouraging messages about the benefits of nonsmoking to friends who smoke. Using innovative technology, the "Wake Up" service will send the recorded messages to the individual smokers by telephone on the morning of Nov. 19, the day the American Cancer Society has established as the Great American Smokeout.
The "Wake Up" service is sponsored by Parke-Davis, marketers of Nicotrol(TM) (nicotine transdermal system), the first transdermal nicotine patch specifically developed for use during waking hours only.
The new "Wake Up" service makes sending these friendly reminder messages to smokers very simple. After dialing 1-900-776-WAKE at a cost of $1.95, callers will be greeted by an automated voice asking them to record a friendly "wake up to the benefits of becoming a nonsmoker" message, and the name and telephone number of the smoker to receive the call. On the morning of the Great American Smokeout, the "Wake Up" service will place the calls to smokers. Costs for placing all "wake up" calls are underwritten by Parke-Davis.
"Two important factors for success in stopping smoking are the smoker's personal choice to quit and the support they receive from friends, colleagues and family members," said Michael H. Samuelson, executive director of Smoke Stoppers, an established behavior modification system provided to patients prescribed Nicotrol which can be used as an additional aid in a physician-prescribed smoking cessation program. According to Samuelson, "It's important for nonsmokers to recognize that there is a person behind the cigarette. Compassion, understanding and acceptance are essential elements of support. One day of gentle encouragement may motivate someone toward a lifetime of improved health."
Many smokers understand the dangers of smoking and want to stop, but are unable to commit to stop smoking on their own. Parke-Davis hopes that offering the "Wake Up" telephone service during the Great American Smokeout, a day when many smokers traditionally decide to stop, will enable friends, family and colleagues to give individuals the extra motivation they need to become nonsmokers.
"Smokers have both a physiological and psychological dependence on cigarettes," explained David P.L. Sachs, M.D., head of the Palo Alto Center for Pulmonary Disease Prevention. "To combat the psychological component, many smokers need to know that someone cares enough to offer support, advice, and information which can then provide further motivation for smoking cessation."
Parke-Davis is a division of Warner-Lambert Company, a global organization devoted to discovering, developing, manufacturing and marketing quality health care and consumer products. The research-based company, which employs approximately 34,000 people worldwide, is headquartered in Morris Plains.
