NEW HAVEN, CONN., TO RECEIVE GRANT FOR NEW BASEBALL FIELD FROM 'COCA-COLA -- HOMERS FOR AMERICA'
ATLANTA, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Coca-Cola USA and Major League Baseball today announced that the New Haven Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees will receive a grant for $50,000 from "Coca-Cola -- Homers For America" to renovate a youth-league baseball field at Clinton Park. Youth organizations in 10 other U.S. cities also will receive field grants through the program. "Coca-Cola -- Homers For America," a collaborative fund-raising effort between Coca-Cola USA and Major League Baseball, generated $560,000 to build and renovate youth-league baseball parks. Through the program, $5,000 was donated for every home run hit during Major and Minor League contests on July 4. Also included were homers hit during the 1992 World Series, raising an additional $60,000. Connecticut's Eric Davis, of the New Britain Yankees, was among the Minor Leaguers to add to the total with one home run. "I am thrilled with the grant from Coca-Cola and Major League Baseball to renovate ballfields at Clinton Avenue Park. We hope every boy and girl that wants to play baseball in New Haven has an opportunity to do so," said John C. Daniels, mayor of New Haven. "Coca-Cola has certainly given that hope a big boost," he said. According to M. Douglas Ivester, executive vice president and principal operating officer/North America, The Coca-Cola Company: "There just aren't enough recreational facilities for young people today, and the need is especially pronounced in the inner city. With 'Coca-Cola -- Homers For America,' we feel we are making a real contribution in places where resources are limited." The grant recipients are determined by an advisory board designated by Major League Baseball. Grant recipients were selected based on need and condition of fields. "With these grants, Major League Baseball and Coca-Cola are bringing 'the great American pastime' to a new generation of young people in cities across the nation," said Len Coleman, executive director of market development, Major League Baseball. The New Haven Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees and other youth-league groups are the first to receive grants in the planned multi-year program. 1993 program details and other grants will be announced soon. Coca-Cola classic is the official soft drink of Major League Baseball.
