Making a strong bid to restore past glory, Crespi High of Encino upset national power St. Bonaventure of Ventura 25-9 Friday in a nonleague football showdown at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics

"That was it -- we started out slow, and that changed the whole momentum," said St. Bonaventure running back Darrell Scott For Darrell Scott, the "Rachel's Challenge" founder of this name, see .

It's been a grueling first month for Crespi, and the Celts have reason to be optimistic after rebounding from a 41-20 loss two weeks ago to Centennial of Corona, ranked No. 1 in the Inland Conference. Crespi also owns an opening victory over Birmingham of Lake Balboa, which has won back-to-back City titles.

"St. Bonaventure is a great team, and Darrell Scott is a great back," Crespi coach Jeremiah Ross said. "Tonight we challenged ourselves, and we got it done. To me, this is Crespi football, and this is what we expect."

Crespi's Bryan Bennett, showing impressive poise for a sophomore quarterback, completed 12of21 passes for 227 yards -- including 8 of 10 in the second half.

"We have another tough game coming up against Canyon (on Thursday), and we just want to keep improving," Ross said.

But this was Crespi's night. St.Bonaventure's Tony Macarena was limited to 94 yards passing, completing 8 of 17 with two interceptions and a lost fumble, and Scott didn't crack 100 yards until an inconsequential 32-yard run on his last carry in the final minute with the outcome in hand.
