NEW DIRECT-MAIL FIRM GOES COMPLETELY PORTABLE
PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Ill., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- A former high-

ranking Zenith Data Systems executive and a large Midwest computer reseller have launched a national mail-order catalog firm called The Complete Portable to provide problem-solving products and services for portable computer users.
The specialized venture is the brainchild of founder-president Andrew Czernek, formerly vice president of product development at Zenith Data Systems; and Compar, Eden Prairie, Minn., reseller of Zenith, Toshiba, Panasonic and Librex portables.
Just about the only thing The Complete Portable doesn't sell are computers themselves.
"Plenty of firms sell portable computers, but users find themselves strapped for help in tailoring their portables to their own needs," Czernek says. "We're filing a gap."
Czernek says the company is hitting a nerve with products for international travelers, such as power cords, power plugs, and telephone connectors for use overseas.
Hard-to-find services offered by The Complete Portable include installation of higher-capacity hard-disk drives and reconditioning of weak computer batteries. The company also has access to keypads, memory chips and other parts for out-of-production portables.
Czernek says local computer dealers often lack the technical expertise and parts for upgrading portables. Mail-order computer buyers have nowhere to turn for post-purchase upgrades. Do-it yourselfers accustomed to tinkering with their desktop models are ill advised to try taking apart and reassembling a tightly-packed notebook computer, Czernek says.
Czernek says one of the firm's first objectives is to educate portable users about the possibilities for upgrading their machines. "People assume they're stuck with what they've got."
Approximately 4.5 million people own portable computers, according to Czernek's market research. Popular new software programs like Microsoft "Windows" and its sister applications have memory and hard disk requirements that exceed the typical capabilities of many almost new portables.
"We've even researched solutions for individual callers," Czernek says. "If someone doesn't see an immediate solution in our catalog, he should call us anyway. If a solution exists somewhere, we're likely to find it."
While The Complete Portable focuses on brand-name accessories, it also develops and markets unique products under its own name, such as a new line of lightweight, flexible solar-power panels.
