Byline: Mary Mary, the mother of Jesus
Mary, in the Bible, mother of Jesus. Christian tradition reckons her the principal saint, naming her variously the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady, and Mother of God (Gr., theotokos). Her name is the Hebrew Miriam.

After a national search to find a new dean of students, California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts
 known as CalArts

U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S.
has named a 14-year employee to the job of overseeing its 1,125-student enrollment.

After interviewing about 80 applicants from across the country, a search committee voted to hire Yvonne Yvonne is a female given name. It is French in origin, and is the female form of Yvon, which is derived from the Germanic name Yves. This name means "Yew Tree", from the Germanic word Iv meaning "yew.  Guy, 45, said CalArts Vice President John Fuller John Fuller may refer to:
  • John 'Mad Jack' Fuller (1757-1834), Squire of the hamlet of Brightling
  • John Fuller (bushranger) (19th century), Australian bushranger
  • John Fuller (poet) (born 1937), English poet and author
  • John G.
.

Guy has been serving as interim dean since May, when predecessor Carole Long left CalArts to accept an administrative job at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. .

Starting at CalArts in 1982, Guy worked as a counselor for seven years before she became the director of psychological services.

``Even before the search, we knew we had an exceptional person in Yvonne, with a long history of serving in a variety of roles,'' added college President Steven Lavine. ``The search persuaded us she is the very best person for the post of dean of students.''

Guy said responsibilities of the dean of students go beyond discipline and include being a liaison between campus administration and student government, making CalArts accessible to the disabled, making psychological counseling available to students and acting as students' advocate in their dealings with faculty and administrators.

``When there are difficulties (involving) students . . . I'm called on to investigate and recommend appropriate action,'' Guy said. ``But I actually think we have a very well-behaved group of students.''

For the 1996-97 school year, CalArts students are paying $16,350 each in tuition For tuition fees in the United Kingdom, see .

Tuition means instruction, teaching or a fee charged for educational instruction especially at a formal institution of learning or by a private tutor usually in the form of one-to-one tuition.
, Guy said. The average age of undergraduates is 22 for the men and 21 for the women, and 45 percent come from California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W). , she added.

The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , Guy said. The college's students hail from the United States and 34 other countries.

Most CalArts students have transferred from other colleges, Guy said.

``The majority don't come right out of high school,'' Guy said. This academic year, only 10 percent of the CalArts students are first-time freshmen, she added.

About 21 percent of the U.S. students at CalArts are minorities, Guy said. About 400 students live on campus.

Guy said one of the changes she has seen in her 14 years on campus is that CalArts students now emphasize practical as well as creative concerns.

``Students in the '90s are very concerned about making a living when they graduate,'' Guy said, ``so there's been a real emphasis toward what we can do to help them with their careers.''

``We don't have that many (employers) lining up to hire composers and poets, but we do have some programs where the students are very sought after,'' Guy added, citing the animation department as an example.

``Our students are very serious about their commitment to make art, and they intend to continue to make art after they get their degree,'' she added.
