NEW CRIME-FIGHTING TOOL LEADS TO SUSPECT.

LANCASTER -- A newly employed crime-fighting tool and a tip from the public helped sheriff's deputies find an armed robbery suspect Noun 1. robbery suspect - someone suspected of committing robbery

Kelly said deputies employed the CodeRED -- the first time they've used it -- after receiving a call from Valley Pharmacy at 1324 W. Avenue J at 8:54 a.m. Johnson was found 40 minutes later.

Lancaster pays a $20,000 annual fee for the service, which is part of its effort to reduce the city's crime by 30 percent in five years.

Simon said an automated message, which went out to thousands of homes within a contained area, featured a description of the suspect that followed an advisory warning residents to stay at home.

Another CodeRED phone message was sent out after the suspect was apprehended.
