NEW BOOK CAPTURES A PASSION FOR THE NORTH WOODS

NEW BOOK CAPTURES A PASSION FOR THE NORTH WOODS
TROY, Mich., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The quiet music of a trout

stream in spring. The fiery-hued palette of the forest in the fall. All the wonders of Michigan's north woods fill the background, and foreground, of Glen Sheppard's passion: conserving nature's legacy.
"Lure of the Lone Trail: Writings from the North Woods" captures some of the best work by this fiercely independent, unflinchingly candid journalist. Publication date for the $15.95 paperback collection (288 pages; Momentum Books, Troy, Mich.) of "Shep's" writings from his North Woods Call newspaper is Nov. 1.
Sheppard was a young reporter from Southeast Michigan in the turbulent '60s when he purchased the North Woods Call, a small biweekly specializing in fishing, hunting and other outdoor news in northern Michigan. He set up shop near Charlevoix and transformed the Call into the most authoritative source for news and comment on outdoor issues from land exploitation to poaching.
The Call became recognized throughout the upper Midwest as a paper to be read, to be reckoned with, to be emulated. It also became a close companion of readers who like prose that truly understands the loyalty of a good bird dog, or the relationship between time and a day spent casting for brook trout.
"Lure of the Lone Trail" speaks clearly of a life devoted to a north woods that must not be destroyed by concrete and condos, or by policies that mistake destruction for "progress."
The book is both a biting call for action and a graceful celebration of beauty. Even those who never set foot in Shep's beloved backyard will understand why he cares so much. And why the neighborhood is lucky to have him.
Sheppard's writings are complemented by the captivating drawings of artist Doug Parrish.
