NEW BOOK 'BOYS TOWN: A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY' TRACES 75 YEARS OF FATHER
    FLANAGAN'S BOYS' HOME
BOYS TOWN, Neb., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- A new 144-page book, "Boys Town: A Photographic History," is now being distributed in observance of this year's 75th anniversary of the famous Father Flanagan's Boys' Home, known worldwide as the original "Boys Town."
The book, published by the Boys Town Press in association with Donning Publishers, features 250 photographs, a narrative history from 1917 to the present day, and a timeline of important dates in the evolution of the organization that became a household word after the 1938 Oscar-winning movie "Boys Town," starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. The information and photographs in the publication were culled from more than 250,000 photos, documents, letters and other correspondence that are preserved at the Hall of History on the Boys Town campus, just west of Omaha, Neb.
Barbara A. Lonnborg, the book's editor, and others researched and wrote the book and selected the photographs. According to Father Val J. Peter, Boys Town executive director, the project stemmed from hundreds of requests from Boys Town donors for an exhaustive publication of this sort.
The publication features a full-color cover, and duotone and black- and-white photos inside. Highlights of the book include stories about Father Flanagan and the boys in the early days of the Home, photos and narratives dealing with the numerous celebrity visitors to Boys Town over the years, and descriptions and images of the filming of the 1938 movie, which was shot on location at Boys Town over a 10-day period.
Both hardcover and softcover versions of the book have been published, at retail prices of $29.95 and $19.95, respectively. It is available at selected bookstores, including some B. Dalton, Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, Doubleday, BookStar and Bookstop locations, and from the Boys Town Press, Boys Town, Neb., 68010 (phone 402-498-3200).
