The city and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary will host the event. ``We hope to alleviate some of the current pressure incurred by the L.A. City Shelter system, (which is) especially felt by the animals in its care,'' said Best Friends' outreach director, Francis Battista. ``Shelters are always more crowded during the summer months after puppy and kitten season, but this year the number of animals in the shelters is alarming, to say the least.'' Best Friends, the largest sanctuaries for abandoned and abused animals, held an adoption event in April at which 200 pets found homes. Companion animals are brought in from around the country, and after rehabilitation, most are adopted by good homes, according to Best Friends. Animals that Best Friends rescues that are too sick or old for adoption will live on a 3,300-acre reserve in Kanab, Utah. Adoption outreaches and rescuers have stepped up their efforts to save the city's stray dogs from euthanization in the months after Knapp told a group of rescuers Los Angeles will conduct sweeps of strays in the weeks before the Democratic National Convention downtown. As a result of the sweeps, more dogs would have to be euthanized. Knapp has since backed away from his statements, saying he will hold off with plans for higher numbers of euthanizations until other solutions can be found. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday, at the George C. Page George C.
