NEW BANK OF MONTREAL SHELL MASTERCARD READY FOR LAUNCH

CALGARY, May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Shell Canada Limited and Bank of Montreal MasterCard announced today the launch of a new credit card program. The program offers customers a choice of two credit cards and is designed to build on the relationship between Shell and Bank of Montreal as sponsors of the successful AIR MILES Travel Reward Program. Existing Shell Vision credit card customers will be receiving information on the program over the coming weeks.
Customers will have two new credit card options:
-- a no-fee Bank of Montreal Shell Vision MasterCard card which offers the flexibility, benefits and world-wide acceptance of MasterCard
-- a Bank of Montreal Shell AIR MILES MasterCard which offers the features of MasterCard, plus the opportunity to earn AIR MILES travel miles from Bank of Montreal, whether or not the merchant is a participating AIR MILES sponsor. For purchases made on the card at AIR MILES sponsors, such as Shell Canada, both the sponsor and Bank of Montreal will issue travel miles. There is an annual $35.00 fee for this card.
"Shell's AIR MILES sponsorship is already a great success with our customers, and we expect that those who purchase from us with a credit card will be interested in the opportunity to earn even more AIR MILES travel miles wherever they shop," said Charles Harrison, vice president retail, Shell Canada Products Limited.
"Whether they choose AIR MILES MasterCard and the opportunity to earn free travel or select the convenience of the no-fee Vision card, Shell customers can be sure that Bank of Montreal is committed to providing the very best in service," said James Brophy, vice president sales and marketing, Bank of Montreal.
Shell Canada and Royal Trust will conclude their joint venture Vision MasterCard agreement. Although many of the expectations of the original joint venture have been met since it was signed in 1989, it was recognized that the long-term business goals and strategies of the two companies were taking different directions. A cooperative decision to dissolve the joint venture was taken and is scheduled to conclude by late 1994.
