NEW ALLIANCE DIRECTORS THREE NAMED TO GROUP TO SUPPORT EDWARDS.

Three new directors have been named to the Edwards Community Alliance, the coalition of Antelope Valley community leaders seeking to support Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  as the Pentagon eyes more bases for closing.

The new directors are California City Planning Commissioner Ed Fuller, Mojave aviation consultant Wen Painter, and Mel Layne, researcher for the Greater Antelope Valley Economic Alliance.

The three were elected at the organization's July 19 meeting at the California City Airport.

 President Tom Wardlaw said the board is now at its full 16 members.

The board consists of two representatives each from communities adjacent to Edwards: California City, Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3. , Lancaster, Mojave, Rosamond and Tehachapi, as well as Los Angeles and Kern counties.

Fuller was elected to a California City seat to replace Jay Sprague, who resigned for business reasons. Fuller retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1996, and since then has worked at the Air Force Research Laboratory and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center The Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC), located inside Edwards Air Force Base, is an aeronautical research center operated by NASA. On March 26, 1976 it was named in honor of the late Hugh L. . He has a degree in airways science and will soon complete his technical management degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) is a not-for-profit, non-sectarian, coeducational private university with a history dating back to the early days of aviation. .

Painter was elected to serve out Jim Ballentine's term representing Mojave. Since 2000, Painter has served part time as an engineering flight test pilot at the National Test Pilot School in Mojave. Painter retired from NASA NASA: see National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Layne was elected to fill a director vacancy representing Los Angeles County. With a degree in electronics, Layne worked for Sperry Rand and then was president of a Colorado agricultural operation. Since moving with his family to Lancaster 16 years ago, Layne has been involved in nonprofit organizations, and commercial and residential real estate development.

ECA members want to retain research and development, test and evaluation missions at Edwards and to encourage defense officials to transfer work there from other bases.

A Pentagon commission is scheduled to release by May 2005 a list of bases to be closed as a cost-cutting measure.
