NEW 210 AREA CODE GOES INTO SERVICE IN SOUTH TEXAS
SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- By the time you put the

ghosts and goblins to bed Saturday night, the new 210 area code serving the greater San Antonio area and other locations in South Texas will become operational.
"At Southwestern Bell, we've been working on this conversion for over two years now, and all systems are go," said Oscar Saucedo, communications manager for Southwestern Bell Telephone in San Antonio.
The 512 area coe?, which has served all of South Texas, officially will be divided into two separate area codes Sunday, Nov. 1. The greater Austin and Corpus Christi areas will continue to use the 512 area code. However, changing to the 210 area code will be the greater San Antonio area, Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley, including Brownsville.
The 512 area code split is necessary, because South Texas is running out of telephone numbers due to population growth and the rapid growth of new telecommunications services, Saucedo said.
Families often have additional lines for teenagers, computers and live-in elderly parents. Businesses rely on multiple lines not only for voice but also for PBX systems, fax machines, computers and other data transmission systems. Cellular phones and pagers also require their own phone numbers.
"These types of changes are never easy," Saucedo said. "However, the transition to the new area code will be much easier than most people might think."
Customers should use the 210 area code when calling parties in the affected area, beginning Nov. 1. This will help them break the habit of dialing the former 512 area code, he explained.
For a period of six months (until May 2, 1993), whether the customer dials the new area code or still uses the previous one, the call will continue to automatically reach the intended party. On May 2, 1993, however, long distance calls placed to the new 210 are code that are not dialed properly will be directed to a recording. It will instruct callers to re-dial the number using the new 210 area code.
Southwestern Bell Telephone has been advising and keeping its customers apprised of the area code change for over a year. Individual letters, inserts in customers' bills and advertisements in the affected area have been distributed.
However, customers may need to contact their long distance companies or telephone system suppliers to reprogram their telecommunications systems to "recognize" the new area code. Individuals also may need to reprogram speed calling lists or automatic dialers which include area codes.
Southwestern Bell Telephone is a wholly owned subsidiary of Southwestern Bell Corporation and provides telecommunications services to more than 9.6 million customers in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.
