Cookbook: It's hard not to envy Susan Herrmann Loomis, who spent two years traveling throughout Italy to produce ``Italian Farmhouse Cookbook'' (Workman; $16.95 paper, $28.95 hardcover). Loomis, whose previous book was the similarly themed ``French Farmhouse Cookbook,'' gets the kind of assignments that aren't in most people's job descriptions.

But readers will find some comfort in living vicariously through her cookbook, where they'll visit the Italian farmers, vintners, restaurateurs and home cooks who starred in what Loomis describes as her ``two-year Italian odyssey.''

In addition to the book's several lengthy profiles, Loomis offers introductions to the people through dozens of recipes. Many of these contain some of their sources' cooking segreti (secrets).

The distinctive dishes offer a glimpse of the places they come from, and many contain surprising flavor combinations.

dishes that represented a region, and things that I hadn't seen a billion times before,'' Loomis said. ``What I hope it does is make people think differently, and expand their knowledge about what goes well together.''

The dishes vary in complexity of preparation and ingredients, but each is clearly written and easy to follow. Some of the dishes to try this fall include pumpkin with fresh tomato sauce, hot zucchini soup with fresh herbs, double-crusted eggplant pizza and fish in Sicilian herb and lemon sauce.

Nifty nibbles: Mini Oreos may be harder to dunk in a glass of milk than regular size cookies, but Oreo fans really like the bite-size morsels. Each cookie is about 1.75 inches wide. An 8-ounce, resealable bag costs about $2.30 at Target.

Mysteries unlocked: Fans of Indian food will find plenty to like in ``The Indian Grocery Store Demystified'' (Renaissance; $14.95), by Linda Bladholm. The author's previous book unlocked the mysteries of Asian markets. Illustrations and product descriptions will help you navigate markets that sell traditional ingredients of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as help you locate what you need at the supermarket. Recipes are here, too, offering more ideas for products such as chickpea chickpea, annual plant (Cicer arietinum) of the family Leguminosae (pulse family), cultivated since antiquity for the somewhat pealike seeds, which are often used as food and forage, principally in India and the Spanish-speaking countries.  powder, ghee ghee: see butter.  and coriander coriander (kōr'ēăn`dər), strong-smelling Old World annual herb (Coriandrum sativum) of the family Umbelliferae (parsley family), cultivated for its fruits.  leaves.

Oktoberfest celebrations are at their peak around town right now, many of them ongoing food and drink events at local restaurants that should last through the remainder of this month.

Most offer special dishes and Oktoberfest beer. And there is usually some form of special Austro-German entertainment, especially on weekend nights.

The newest restaurant presenting Oktoberfest activities is the recently opened Karl Strauss Brewery Garden at Universal CityWalk, 1000 Universal Center Drive, Universal City, (818) 753-2739. Others worth consideration are Matterhorn Chef, 13726 Oxnard St., Valley Glen, (818) 781-4330, and Old Vienna, 3845 Telegraph Road, Ventura, (805) 654-1214.
